My mother will be going through chemo soon and fell in love with the Raven headpiece. She offered to buy me the book and I’m very glad I bought it myself instead of letting her pay. The stories are nice and the photography is beautiful, but none of the costume patterns are included. Instead of the headpiece and tunic for the raven, there is a very dull poncho and cardigan. All of the patterns are very simplified versions of the elaborate costumes. I would have paid much more to be able to have the actual costume patterns, and easily the cost of the book for just the Raven set. The designer says one thing that is important for designs is to be able to be translated to multiple sizes. Then why is it I have dozens of old knitting books with only one size? If you weren’t say, a size 34, then you’d figure out how to do the math yourself. If I keep this it will end up being a coffee table book. Pretty but useless. Attached are just a few of the fantastic costumes and their disappointing counterparts.

I am among the knitters who are incredibly disappointed in this book. I pre-ordered the book and at the time little information was available other than the gorgeous costume photos. Excited to knit these costumes, I purchased the book right away.I received the book in the mail today and was heartbroken when I discovered that none of the patterns for the costumes in the book were published. Instead, there are patterns for very "dulled-down" sweaters and wraps inspired by the costumes. Even the less "out there" costumes had no resemblance to the patterns provided in the second half of the book.I contacted the author and publisher through their websites asking for supplemental patterns of the costumes that I had expected to see. Let's hope something comes of it. Otherwise I'll have no choice but to return the book as I am not interested in knitting any of the patterns published in the second half of the book.UPDATE:I emailed Virtual Yarns asking for supplemental patterns for the costumes. While I did share my disappointment, my email was pleasant. Unfortunately I received an incredibly condescending and belittling response from the VY team. Not only will I be returning the book and updating my review to one star, I will also be sure to never purchase products from Virtual Yarns again. Here is their response:Dear Madame,It is always advisable to read the product description before making a purchase.I have copied the two simple sentences from the very prominent product description which accompanies the image of the front cover of GLAMOURIE on sales sites and has done from the first moment the book appeared on these sites.“While the first half of this book is an unrestrained flight of fancy, the second half contains full instructions for knitting beautiful garments based upon each costume, all written with Alice Starmore’s trademark accuracy and precision. By developing each of these patterns from its associated costume, she has revealed how her mind works and how her imagination led her from the initial inspiration through to the final design.”Alice's short introduction is also available to read on sales sites. It is very short and easy to read and understand. I quote her words from her introduction –"THESE GLAMOURIE COSTUMES ARE NOT THE STUFF OF EVERYDAY WEAR AND ARE WELL BEYOND THE PRACTICALITY OF WRITTEN INSTRUCTION"All the designs and some costumes featured in the book were published by Virtual Yarns on our social media pages prior to publication. You did not purchase the book from us and so we cannot offer you a refund. With very best wishes,Fiona Macdonald, VY

I am returning this book. The only word I can use is disappointed. It feels like a huge bait and switch as the beautiful costumes are only used as inspiration for far more boring patterns. The Selkie costume is stunning but the Selkie pattern is a boring colorwork cardigan. A full half of the book is simply a look book with inspiration stories about things that you won't be able to make unless you reverse engineer a similar thing. I have the feeling there are going to be quite a few unsatisfied knitters.

Received this yesterday after anticipating it's arrival for a month. Within 10 minutes of opening it I was filing for a return. If you're expecting patterns for the designs that were used to extensively promote this book you will be very disappointed. What you get are patterns "inspired by elements" of those designs. Essentially watered down versions that bear almost no relation to the patterns in the promotion pictures. Love the "Raven"? The pattern you get that's "inspired" by the design is a poncho or sweater with some feathers around the neck. Love the Cabled sweater from the "Eagle"? Not in here. You get the pattern for wrap. The jacket and hat pictured on the front cover are in the patterns in the book.

A three for the beautiful book but it does not include all the knitting patterns. I decided I would knit the Selkie sweater with the beautiful collar. The pattern is not in the book. Then I saw the gorgeous back of the Cailleach and I knew my daughter would love it. Again disappointed as that pattern is not in the book but rather a boring fair isle sweater. Starmore has better fair isle patterns in her other books. If she shows beautiful sweaters In a knitting pattern book, she should include the patterns. I have knit many of her sweaters from her other books most of which I own.

I preordered this very expensive book expecting to be able to knit the gorgeous costumes (especially the Raven set). When it arrived, I was beyond disappointed to find it was half picture book with stories and the patterns were all for dull versions of the costumes. As another reviewer said, feels like a bait & switch. Will be returning this book. It is beautiful to look at (thus the 2 stars instead of 1), but I can see the pictures online for free.

So incredibly disappointed. I Preordered and I was so excited for the book, but the amazing fancy PATTERNS ARE NOT IN THIS BOOK! The expectation is out of this world, but the patterns are boring copies.
