Review

“This juicy prep-school thriller has queen bees, super-cliques, and hints of PLL and Gossip Girl. But if you think you’ve got every plot turn figured out, think again: the drama is just getting started.”—Seventeen Magazine   “[A] whirlwind, fast-paced YA mystery. . . Not only will Mele’s gorgeous, melodic writing have you entranced, but the layered mystery of it all will have you scrambling to turn the pages to see who-dun-it.”—Buzzfeed"Steeped in scandal and profound tragedy, this is a dark and thrilling look at female friendships, the pressures of scholastic success, and mental health . . . A classic and frightening tale of betrayal and mental illness told in a fresh and contemporary way, this book is difficult to set down for even a moment. It is an intricately designed, beautifully written, and extraordinarily chilling story."—School Library Journal"Mele creates a cast of sharp-edged, prickly students; the fluid sexuality of various characters is handled well, and themes of betrayal and bullying are front and center. An eerie, unsettling thriller with deadly consequences."—Publishers Weekly"Mele . . .  weave[s] a tale of mystery, intrigue, and revenge in the style of Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why (2007), but with its own twists to keep readers on the their toes."—Booklist"The characters and their relationships are nuanced, especially sexually fluid Kay, who has intimate encounters with males and females. This blend of predictable prep school elements with unpredictable suspense makes this a fizzy read for fans of the genre."—Kirkus Reviews"This is a fun, dark whodunit with loads of twists and turns to keep readers guessing."—VOYA"A . . . sophisticated read that is fast-paced and surprising to the last page."—School Library Connection

This book is about Kay and her friends living at a boarding school where they are known to be those girls we all hated in high school. They rule their school bullying everyone who breathes in their direction. Then everything changes when a girl named Jessica who "no one knows" is murdered. Kay doesn't even know her which is why it's odd when she receives an email from her telling her to take down the bullies or Kay will be taken down with her own secrets. I had to read this book as fast as I could just so I could have the chance to tell people everywhere to read it. This book has it all, lust, sex, drugs, scandal. It was nuts. I couldn't help but continue to say that this book was like pretty little liars but at a boarding school. I knew it was going to be good but it was better then good. It was SO GOOD IT WAS EXHAUSTING. I couldn't stop reading until I found out who did it. And GODDDD was it worth it.

Un-put-down-able is not a word, but I will use it here anyway. I've done nothing since I picked up this book but feverishly page my way through to the end. It starts with a grisly murder laid out in gorgeous prose, and gets deeper, darker, and more twisted from there. Everyone is a suspect. Nobody can be trusted. Everyone has a dark side—most of all Kay, the main character, herself.Set in a snooty New England boarding school with lots of fierce competition, arch dialogue, and juicy romantic entanglements, this book would be a fun read even if you weren't frantically trying to figure out who was murdering whom, framing whom, and protecting whom, and why. But on top of all that, it's also a murder mystery: and a twisty, slippery one at that!I dare you to pick up this book. I dare you even harder to put it down.

Beneath the silvery moonlight, our skin gleams like bones. From that gorgeous first line, I was hooked. The blurb from the deal announcement just doesn't do it justice. PEOPLE LIKE US is a seductive psychological thriller with beautiful literary writing and an unreliable narrator. It takes place in an all-girls private school -- oh, and it's super queer. There might be more queer characters than non, AND I LOVED IT.This book is about cutthroat ambitious girls and secrets that won't stay in the past. It's about what we sacrifice for the sake of our own self-preservation. It's about the blurred line between friendship and more-than-friendship, and the pure agony of being trapped there.I'll have chills for a long time.

Mean girl Kay and her boarding school crew find a dead classmate and the police have questions. Next she’s online blackmail message threaten to divulge her deepest secrets if she doesn’t spill secrets about her posse. With the help of Nola, an outcast classmate with a skill for hacking, Kay is determined to solve the mystery, before she’s arrested for murder.PEOPLE LIKE US are the privileged, popular girls at Bates Academy, the kind of girls who aren’t usually suspects in murder. But scholarship student Kay isn’t quite like the truly privileged girls with expensive clothes and lifestyles. She realizes she’s treated others terribly over the past three years, and making amends might be a little late. At some point I questioned the reliability of Kay’s narration. Was she truly innocent or more devious than she let on.Who doesn’t love a good boarding school book? Throw in murder, revenge, some LBGT romance and Dana Mele’s debut novel is a hit. I was hooked from the beginning, invested in Kay, and unsure of the culprit.PEOPLE LIKE US is a story I’ll reread and I recommend it to YA mystery and thriller aficionados.

When the reviews said this book was a tautly-written thriller, they weren’t kidding! I’ll say it up front: I’m a big fan of plot. Give me lots of action and I’ll learn about the characters and setting through the plot. And although each of the students in this boarding school has quite a few unlikeable qualities, didn’t we all when we were in high school? The fact is, any of these kids could be a suspect in a murder because, well, you just never know. One question: When is this novel going to be optioned for a movie?! It would make a killing! (See what I did there?!)

I loved Dana Mele's debut novel, People Like Us!I never attended boarding school. For some reason, that makes me obsessed about reading books that take place there. This is a particularly good book in that genre with a mystery that kept me guessing until almost the end.Mele captured the popular, "mean girls" I remember from growing up realistically and empathetically. Kay, the main character, is well-developed and multifaceted. There is always a little bit more going on with the characters' lives than you originally believe.I would highly recommend this book to YA readers, young and old (me being the later).

This was a fun, twisty read. I really appreciated the portrayal of the main character's bisexuality as a component of the story and not the driving feature (i.e., the story wasn't about a young woman being bisexual, it was a story about a bisexual young woman). Inclusion of such portrayals is refreshing to see in the mainstream market. The only thing I wanted more of was detail on all the horribly Mean Girl things she had supposedly done to earn her reputation. I predicted one of the twists, but the other definitely caught me off guard. I think I even gasped! I rarely read YA novels, but I enjoyed this one. A great debut!

This is a compelling story that kept me on my toes. I couldn't put it down! The main character's arc is wonderful - she went from being a mere mean girl to a young woman with a tragic past that she is forced to come to terms with in the wake of a more recent tragedy, coupled with a mysterious person who is out for revenge.
