Charles Egan was born in Nottingham, England, of Irish parents. When he was five, the family returned to Ireland, as his father had been appointed Resident Medical Superintendent of St. Luke's, a psychiatric hospital in Clonmel, in County Tipperary. Every summer they visited his father's family's farm, outside Kiltimagh in County Mayo for a month, where his grandmother and uncles spent many evenings, talking about family and local history. The family subsequently moved to County Wicklow, where he initially attended the De La Salle Brothers School in Wicklow town. He then went to the Jesuits' Clongowes Wood College (James Joyce's alma mater), and subsequently studied Commerce in University College Dublin, graduating in 1973. After an initial career in the private sector, including Marubeni Dublin, (where he met his future wife, Carmel), he joined the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) in Dublin. After a few years, the desire to be his own boss, led him to resign and set up his own business, which ran for 30 years. I've enjoyed all three of these books and look forward to the next if it's coming. I have a large collection of books on the famine in Ireland. My interest began with wanting to understand what my gr grandparents and gr gr grandparents went through. I've learned a lot but nearly all of the information focuses more on the larger impact and government policies. There are a few first hand accounts of what was experienced by observing and traveling through the country. What was missing was the challenges within the counties. I always wondered how was it for the people who survived it? How was it for the people who ran the workhouse? This trilogy perfectly addresses how they coped and what they went through. I especially appreciated the character development. The author does a masterful job of bringing the reader right into that world. I'm not a big fiction reader but these books I can not put down.
This and the other two of the trilogy were excellent. There were very graphic in the descriptions of the terrible times of the 1846 - 1850 period in Ireland, particularly, County Mayo. The famine and resulting starvation with the added horrors of the fevers that plagued the nation. The death and the way people were treated, Reading of the way bodies were left by the wayside or in the ruins of their mud huts was a trying experience. I’m glad that I read it.
I read all three of Charles Egan’s books in this series. My family is from Ireland and immigrated during the famine, so the chronicles are especially poignant and meaningful. In ten days I had read all three books. I was riveted, compelled to read and to learn. Please buy these three. I assure you you will not be disappointed! Egan writes masterfully!
This 3 part book series should be required reading for all Irish students. The horrible part of their history is tragically researched and related in graphic detail.
A very deep story that held me until the end. I sometimes had to put it aside for a few days at a time as I became so entwined in the character's lives. It was like I was re-living what my Irish ancestors endured. Highly recommend!
This trilogy was an important read as it filled and beefed some of my own family stories. It was raw, but sensitive, characters became loved and endearing. I totally recommend the trilogy read such fabulous writing. Thanks ðŸ™ðŸ» Charles you’re works are important to my family story.
This is the 3rd book of Charles Egan's trilogy on the Irish Famine. It is a historical novel based on actual facts from the horrendous genocide of the Irish people. I can't recommend these books enough and I wish there was a 4th book to continue reading about the fictional Ryan family.
Enjoyed this second book of the trio. Told the further story of the famine in Ireland. Looking forward to Book three. Recommend this and the first book too.
