About the Author
Hannah Jewell is an on camera host for the video team at The Washington Post. She was previously a writer at BuzzFeed UK, where she became known for her humor writing about gender and her satire of UK and US politics, and for presenting BuzzFeed's live 2016 election night show. She was born in London, but her parents whisked her away to California when she was a baby, and so she grew up frolicking on beaches and through redwood forests. She earned a degree from UC Berkeley in Middle Eastern Studies, taking a year out to study and work in Beirut. She had a great time in Lebanon but now is unfortunately banned from that country. She then returned to the UK in 2013 for an MPhil in International Relations and Politics at Cambridge, which was mostly fine. Her career highlight so far was breaking the story of the "Milifandom" for BuzzFeed, a strange phenomenon when teen girls across Britain went wild for the leader of the Labour Party Ed Miliband in the 2015 general election. Now she lives in Washington and wishes she had cats.

She Caused a Riot unveils lesser-known women heroes in history who made incredible impacts during their time period. Important reading for both men and women as it illuminates why women must fight for equality. Hannah Jewell’s satirical, self-deprecating, insightful and entertaining portrayal of women through the ages kept my interest from page 1 to the Glossary. Revealing historical repression to women was a direct hit to my soft, baby-boomer, white male, entitled gut. Hannah had me laughing, crying, shouting out in anger at oppression through her gifted, Millennium-style writing. The timing of this book is perfect! My biggest compliment is that this book created a change in me. I desire to be a change agent to fix wrongs that have been done. She Caused a Riot would create wonderful discussions for book clubs.
The author tried too hard to be funny and she isn't. She kept injecting her humor into the stories that totally detracted from the information. I really like the premise of learning about these woman. Can't even finish the book because the stories are cluttered with stupid humor.
If you're looking for a traditional history book with just the facts presented in a dry and stodgy strait-laced style, don't buy this!Ms Jewell clearly has a remarkably unique style of writing that entertains the reader with her humorous observations, presented in a full-on Millennial-conversational style, and yet still she deftly gives you all the facts and references you need to delve more deeply into the lives and achievements of her 100 feisty/nasty women. The women Jewell covers are from all across the globe, from ancient times to recent modern history. All these women deserve to be recognized but were generally relegated to the 'second division' of history, no doubt because of their gender. I found the section on the brave women who resisted the Nazis in Germany especially moving.I really appreciated the glossary of Millennial slang for the older folks like myself!
I have bought at least 7 copies of this so far. It's a great gift for any woman with a sense of humor.
What a smart and funny book that tackles a realm of under-appreciated, badass women with ease and lightness. It is laugh-out-loud funny, easy to consume, but hard-hitting and oh-so-necessary. Thank you for this collection of stories of women who shook up the world.
Bought for young teen daughter who loves biographies about women. Huge mistake. Language is coarse and vulgar. Sad I exposed my daughter to this. Straight to trash.
I really enjoyed this book. It includes a great collection of historical women from all over the world. The majority of them I had never heard of before so it was great being able to learn about the amazing things they did. Hannah Jewell did a great job in writing this nonfiction book. It was really funny at times, which is my favorite kind of nonfiction. Her snark and humor were so on point, it felt more like she was telling me about these women over dinner rather than through a book. I would highly recommend!
This a fabulous and extremely funny book! There's so many great women I'd never heard of in here and her selection of women from a diverse array of backgrounds is what makes the book so important. Each biography is a beautifully composed historical vignette, full of humor, and interesting research and stories. Some of the narratives are also extremely sad and very politically powerful. In short this would make a great present for any young woman!
