About the Author
Robert J. Blake was born and raised in New Jersey. As a boy he made "tons of drawings" and used up thousands of crayons. He says, "I even did a huge crayon mural on our hallway that was not artistically appreciated by my parents."Sharing one large room with two older brothers was "total chaos," he recalls. "We had lots of animals - dogs, ducks, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, lizards, turtles, snakes, birds, fish, and even two flying squirrels. And, oh yes, a tarantula. I think my parents were afraid to come up to our room."Mr. Blake now resides in New Jersey with his wife and son. He works in his studio, a renovated barn on his property. Mr. Blake says, "I would like to paint in every state in the United States and in every country in the world.""I hope my books lend the reader a feeling, and emotion, a new point of view, a new way to look at something that they might not have experienced otherwise."Robert J. I really like the story. The drawings were nice enough. I wish the print quality was better, but otherwise, I think my niece will really like this story as she's learning about the Iditarod in school. Each student gets assigned team that they follow throughout the race. I have some reservations about the Iditarod as a whole in the treatment of the animals. This book will help open the discussion about the dogs and their welfare in the race.
My two year old twins are really into sled dogs so this was a good story for them. They sit through the length of text on the page without a problem. The pictures are nice but a little repetitive so they start to get bored with the pictures by the end. That is the only reason I took off one star.
Wonderful illustrations and a realistic story that give the feel of the Iditarod race and capture the nature of its canine competitors. The paintings of Mick, the woman musher, look like Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod. Although the book is fiction, the story is very plausible and exciting. I read this to a class of kindergarteners and it held their interest. Read the Author's Note at the end for some interesting info about the rules of the Iditarod.
Perfect as a part of my classroom reading program.
My grandsons loved reading this book. It is a keeper! I would highly recommend this to any parent or grandparent to give to your child/grandchild. It would also make a nice addition to any school library or a birthday gift for any boy or girl 8-12 yrs. old.
I like the book. My 3 yr old son loves Husky dogs etc. as he loves the movie Eight Below.
Great price for a soft cover book.
