This is chock full of classic hymns. I know a good 75% of the hymns contained within the book. Even so, there are 2 hymns that I consider absolute classics that are NOT included - Great is Thy Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art. What's a hymn book without those I ask? :-) There are multiple hymns that are represented with 2 or sometimes 3 versions of the melody. On its own that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing but I would certainly have preferred eliminating a duplicate or two in order to include those 2 missing hymns. While the printing might be a bit small for some a pair of reading glasses would fix that issue. The binding issue that others mention is definitely an issue. If this is the largest comb binding that you can get, I would have preferred 2 smaller books to the one big one that is difficult to use. Definitely worth the price.
I think this book is great for improvisers who have trouble reading bass clef in hymn books. However, I had purchased it for a younger student who is Catholic and she didn't recognize many of the songs. However, as a Protestant and long time church musician, I did.
Pluses: 1.) Melody and chords, just what you'd expect from a fake book. 2.) Index of Hymn titles. 3.) Index of Tune titles, for those songs which have a specific tune name. 4.) Songs arranged in (almost) alphabetical order. 5.) Cheap enough to buy two--one for home, one for church.Minuses: 1.) No Index of composers, which I don't really mind. 2.) Some typographical errors and omissions here and there regarding chords. 3.)The "comb" binding is a bit snug. If you use this book a lot, the pages will start to rip out in pretty short measure. I removed all the pages in mine, used a triple hole-punch on them, and put them all into a BIG ring-binder. 4.) A few glaring omissions. (There's no "How Great Thou Art," for example.)Conclusion: A good buy at a very good price, even with the imperfections.
Easy and fun to play classic hymns. Allows an old guy returning to trumpet to concentrate on the quality of sound and intonation. Would be good for beginners and intermediate players who want to improve their sound
So far, so good. Some of the chording is a little basic, but that would not be true for more basic pianists. As it is, I augment the harmonies a bit, even when playing from a "real" (four-part) hymnal. For as rarely as I have to fill-in for our other accompanists, this works wonderfully!
I truly do love this book! In my morning devotions I read one Hymn story a day from my Kindle (HYMNS..Inspiring stories...also purchased from Amazon) and then go to the piano to play it. Nine times out of ten it is in The Hymn Fake Book. I used to search thru several hymnals and many times not finding it. This books includes ALL types...old standards, Sunday School songs and newer contemporary ones. If you're a Christian and like to play from a Fake book...don't hesitate a moment from getting this one.
As a church organist, I love this book and use it often, especially for music before and after Mass. You'll need to know how to improvise with chords, because it is only the treble line and chords. Really wide selection of hymns, mostly traditional and old favorites.
They left out Great is Thy Faithfulness! Hard to believe, but true!
