I heard the author, Tony Johnson, interviewed once. He said he could listen to some talk about Vietnam and very quickly know if they were actual there. So can I. Tony was there.I had it much better than Tony but that's another story.Tony is a very gifted writer. Very engaging. Once you start reading you can't put his story down.But what I admire and respect the most is the ,"Lessons Learned" at the end.Why read if it doesn't make you a better person?Tony shares his story but of greater good is he shares his wisdom.I highly recommend Tonys books to vets who were there and anyone who wasn't but wants to know what Vietnam was about and like. And wants to "learn".
Former Marine Anthony Johnson's vivid description of an enemy ambush at the waterfall where the enemy on high ground is picking off the wounded Marines whenever they move is a gut-wrenching read. He describes everything in clear recall. You ache for the guys caught in that situation and you cringe as one of the wounded Marines expecting to die of his wounds, struggles to pull the pin and release the spoon of a fragmentation grenade he shoves under his belly primed to go off if his body is moved by the enemy collecting everything of value after the fight. You think what if a medic or a buddy comes for him first...and of course that's what happens... but not the ending you expect! Johnson's eyewitness account is right on.
I arrived at Hill 10 late September '67. Made it through Tet as a 60mm mortar man with Bravo 1/7. Wounded March 8, 1968., a couple of months before The Waterfall. Over the years I've heard different versions depending where the guy was in the battle. Mr. Johnson did a great job of recreation the "two" battles. A real story of marines who are in a bad situation but keep going to kill the enemy. Semper fi
The author is very accomplished and very intelligent. He has penned a great short story that was worth my time. I wish he had the time to write a book containing some 300 pages, I am sure it would be worthwhile reading. I highly recommend this book.
Reading books are not something I do that often. I literally could not stop reading. I read it in an hour between calls. Coming from a military family, airforce father, army husband, army son active duty still.... it brings everything into perspective and a little bit of an understanding what these men went through and came back to. You never know or can imagine what these men endured fighting for our country.It was great book, easy to read, informative, sad, heartbreaking and proud.I hope you continue to write and share with us. #respect #proud #privledgedtoknowyou
you could almost feel the pain these soldiers went thru, and this soldier carried a grudge against the Air Force for forty years till he heard the whole story. I am a Vietnam vet so it hit close to home.
Having served in Viet Nam I can relate to this story. I was not a grunt but I witnessed them doing some unbelievable things. Seventh Marines was a fine unit with great fighting spirit.
This is a story told by an intelligent, informed individual. I've read combat stories that don't give much information about tactical reasons for how and why both opposing forces do what they do. This isn't like that. It's enjoyable and informative to read. It's not long but it doesn't cost much.
