I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!
Rick and company continue to fascinate me as a reader, even after eleven volumes, and I continue to wonder if Robert Kirkman will ever stop coming up with new ideas and new challenges for our group to deal with, but so far, that is not the case. Trouble comes at the survivors, as it always seems to, from both outside and inside the group, and this new addition to the saga is no different. A murder comes early and a slow building dread caused by an unseen enemy stays with the group throughout most of this volume. A character relates a soul wrenching tale of what he felt he needed to do to survive before joining the group and I was once again surprised (although by now, I probably shouldn't be) when a character we are close to dies.As this story continues to move forward and the group continues to face new enemies, it is clear that their own humanity is in constant jeopardy. While nemesis like the Governor, from a few volumes back, were brutal and I would be hard pressed to provide him with any redeeming qualities, it is not always that cut and dry and Rick also is questioning how brutal he has become lately. He and the others seem willing to not only do away with their enemies, but make them suffer for their crimes. His level of viciousness has rubbed off on his son, at least to a certain extent, and while these characters are just that, characters, it is heartbreaking to see how lost many of these people seem to be, unsure of who they are anymore or what they are doing in this dead world.Which for me, continues to make this story all the more intriguing.
While Rick Grimes and his group continue on their way to Washington, D.C., they start to suspect they are being stalked by someone in the woods. Suddenly, Dale is kidnapped in the night and Rick, Abraham, Michonne, and Andrea set out to find this new threat and stop them. But, these survivors may finally see their humanity torn to the last shred with the actions they take to protect their own.
In the beginning of the story, we were told that this wasn't just another zombie story. It was a story of people, and how they change in the face of danger and death. This latest story chronicles the further adventures of Rick and gang, having to deal with dead and living alike. Surprises around every turn, you never get tired of reading this. One could only imagine what the human psyche would have to concoct to be able to survive an ordeal like Rick's, but the Walking Dead books do a great job of showing how individuals in society would deal with a scenario like this. The only bad part of the book, was the last page, knowing I had to wait to continue the story!
Character-driven, plot-loaded, premise-establishing and genre-legitimizing . . . What more can be said of Kirkman's continuing masterwork as it builds, steadily and nerve-rackingly, toward perhaps its penultimate and series-wrapping story arc. The undead, the Walkers, Lurkers and rotters -- the Zombies, have never been enough of a threst to the vestiges of humanity. Living mankind has always been the most-dangerous enemies of Rick Grimes' group -- because the dead are dead, the living retain the capacity for Evil, and even walking among the dead, humanity is once again going to war.
The brilliant Robert Kirkman has given us a wonderful, and creative universe of post apocalypse world of the living dead. Zombies has become a favorite topic of late. This series is a shining example of good, well thought out plot and story lines with mixing in the struggles of the human condition. What happens to our morals? Do we fight to try and rebuild our society, or do we just give in? Even pure survival is an ultimate test.Start with book one if you really want to be able to follow the story line.
It's always interesting to see some of the iconic scenes in the TV show in the comics. I'll admit the TV show pulled it off better than the comic, but it was still entertaining in this book. This series of comics moved very quickly and was quite enjoyable overall.
I love zombie stories but I require quality. And volume 11 of this saga is quality indeed. The story line, the art, everything is great. Volume 11 is full of exciting passages: The cannibals, theinsane little twin killing his brother with Carl taking justice on his own hands &c. However, I would have fancied better Morgan telling Rick what he saw, rather than the lad (Carl) confessing his crime to Rick (I have not gotten hold of volume 12, so I don't know how Rick reactedto his son's confession). Morgan re-appearance in the previous volume was nice, and Michonne fancing him adds extra spice to the story line. Overall, I recommend all the volumes hitherto released in this series.5 stars.
