You can tell the author is passionate about kids ministry and for the Lord, which is the biggest thing! This book has some good suggestions, especially for someone starting out. There were good reminders for me too (been in ministry a decade) The chapters are very short (some less than a full page), so it's actually a pretty short read with the space in between. It was a good starting book to go through with our ministry interns.A couple of things I didn't love:- The tone is very informal (probably just preferential). More like an email to someone versus a book.- There was a typo in one of the last chapters ("were" instead of "was" if I remember correctly)- The author repeated himself often, and told the same story twice, introducing it like it was a new story (the apple and machete). The last chapter had a whole paragraph that was repeated word for word. Totally may have been intentional, but seemed odd to me.- Didn't have an easy to follow flow. Because the chapters were so short, maybe would have been nice to have sections of the book with a title page introducing the topic for those chapters? Kind of felt like they were snippets written separately, printed, and bound together without a lot of thought to the overarching flow.Overall, it was a good book with some good content.
This is a must read book for all children's ministers. I have enjoyed being refreshed in what I am called to do. I have used Mark Harper and Super Church Curriculum for over 25 years. I respect Pastor Mark and what he has done for this generation in preparing and sowing seed into so many young lives. He should be very proud of this book because it is such an encouragement to anyone who reads it. I am ordering one for all of my staff so they too can enjoy it as much as I have.
Read this book. Read it whether you're starting out in ministry or you are a veteran. This is the book I needed when I first started out in ministry. Such a great resource that really breaks down kidmin into bit size pieces. Oh the grief I could have avoided if I had read this book from the get go. Worth anyone in ministry reading. Simply replace the word kid with "student" or "adult" and it all applies. So worth your time. Plus its a quick read.
It's okay, but didn't give me anything vital. As his personal story, it was okay. I was disappointed. I wanted to be energized and amazed, or really convicted by this. It wasn't particularly different from the others I have read on the same subject. I read "Show Them Jesus" and felt that, for me, it had ideas I could actually put to use.
Loved the topics broken down by chapter.A quick read, but very fulfilling.Great ideas and tips! Will be using lots of these tips in my ministry!
I liked that the chapters were bite sized so even if you only had 5 minutes you could still get a grest nugget to use and learn.
Life changing for my ministry
This book was a joy to read (this is being said by a person who typically does not *enjoy* reading)! The content is chalked full of not just Kid's Min theory, but practical and actionable things that you can implement immediately to help you lead your Kid's Min better, more effectively, and more efficiently so that the kids in your care thrive.This may seem silly to some, but I think one reason why the book was so easy for me to read was because of the short chapters. A lot is said in few words. I liked that a lot! My attention span doesn't like long chapters. But most of these chapters were only three or four pages each, which made the topics very easy to digest. I could read about four chapters at a time (which made me feel like I was really moving along, haha!) and then I would have to stop to mull over the content I just read. Like I said, a lot is said in few words.The chapters are also laid out very nicely so that when I need to reference back to something, I'll be able to find it easily. This is a handbook that will be in my library for a very, very long time.If you're in Kid's Min, do yourself, your volunteers, and your kids a favor and pick this book up. You won't regret it.
