I am writing my dissertation and my committee recommended (made clear that I needed to read this book) in addition to Guba and Lincoln (2015). This book has been very helpful and I hightly recommend this book for qualitative research.
I have been in the dissertation phase for too long. I had a quantitative study ready and committee approved just for the top reviewer to tell me to do a qualitative instead. I am not a qualitative-type-of-girl. I love my numbers so this was such a difficult change for me to undertake. This version of Merriam's Qualitative Research was a God-send to me. The head of the research department suggested I get it since my new study is basic qualitative and that was pure genius. This book breaks down the process into simple, real English. I could not recommend this book strongly enough for anyone who really needs to understand the qualitative research process.
This is a pretty good textbook on qualitative research for education. The author seems to be one of the more oft-quoted scholars on the topic of qualitative research in the education community. Qualitative research can be a difficult topic to get a grasp on and some books on the subject can be quite dense. This book is fairly easy to read and gives a good introduction to the topic. If you need to learn about qualitative research and you are in education, this book is a good addition to your library.

An excellent introductory, accessible text without too many technical jargons. Those who are new to qualitative research will appreciate this well-written and popular text. More advanced researchers may still want to retain a copy as a reference.
It's a thick book and some parts are pretty dull and boring, but it definitely covers almost everything (about 90-95%) you need to know about qualitative research.
As a current doctoral student, who is more interested in the qualitative research method, this book provided impactful insights regarding research, themes, coding, analyzing, and anonymity. The read was very simple to follow and this book will remain with me even after I attain my degree..
I have received little to no support while "discovering" how to write a qualitative dissertation. And while I have amassed and devoured many books, Merriam's is my absolute favorite. There are many good qualitative sources, but often they write in a convoluted manner, using different verbiage that actually mean the same thing but without identifying that fact. So you spend a great deal of time making a "road map" of what the same words mean to different authors - frustrating to the novice. Merriam writes in an understandable manner. Her work is worth every penny!
